Abberton Rural Training

A rural skills training provider and charitable organisation supporting people of all ages with a wide range of abilities to access flexible accredited learning in an outdoor safe environment

How it can help

Alongside learning new skills in horticulture, woodland skills, countryside & environment, carpentry and rural crafts, Abberton Rural Training (ART) provides a holistic wrap-around provision of mentoring to improve mental health, confidence and wellbeing. They also provide counselling and advocacy services, with 2 qualified counsellors providing 1:1 counselling and group therapy.

ART works with lots of different cohorts such as adults with learning and physical disabilities and young adults with lifelong conditions such as autism. They also provide 'Activate' sessions during school holidays for children who have special educational needs and disabilities or have Free School Meals.

ART delivers lots of local community projects with partners including GP surgeries and schools so there are lots of accessible locations open to get involved with. They also organise wellbeing walks and cycling activities to encourage people to enjoy the benefits of a healthier more active lifestyle. For those who are isolated they can offer free transport to their training sites. You can contact ART for help and support to access their services.

Their primary focus is on residents of Essex, with main training locations in the Colchester, Maldon and Chelmsford areas. They also have a number of community-based training sites in Maldon, Braintree and Chelmsford, check their website to find out what projects are running near you. Projects are popping up across Essex at new sites all the time as a need arises. Access and facilities vary per site so ART can suggest the best site for specific needs and assist with transport.
