How it can help
The Learning Disabilities and Autism Support Nurse provides support to all people with learning disabilities or autism in hospital settings. Support can be given in the following circumstances:
- when attending accident and emergency (A&E)
- during a planned admission
- during an inpatient stay
- during visits for test or investigations
- when attending outpatient appointments
The nurse will liaise with the individual, their families, carers and professionals. They will make sure that reasonable adjustments are made to support them to access health services. Possible adjustments include:
- a quieter waiting area
- easy read information
- being seen more quickly
- visits to clinical areas prior to admission
- extra time at appointments
The service also offers signposting.
