First, talk to your child’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) about your concerns.
If you feel that the current school is not suitable, you can request changing to a special school as part of the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) annual review.
If your child is currently going through the EHC needs assessment process, you can express a preference for a particular school or setting when the draft EHCP is issued.
Determining the right school or setting is an important step. It can help to:
- discuss your options with your child’s SENCO and the SEND Operations Team
- understand the different types of special schools and enhanced provisions that exist across Essex
- make an appointment to visit the schools that you feel might meet your child’s needs
- talk to the headteachers and other staff members
