What happens at an Educational Psychology assessment

Find out what to expect during an Educational Psychology assessment

An Educational Psychologist (EP) assessment happens as part of the EHC needs assessment. The EP will write a report which explains your child's strengths and their needs.

The report:

  • explains how to support your child's learning and development
  • helps the local authority decide if your child needs an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

What to expect from an EP assessment

Before the assessment, the EP will read background information about your child. This could include medical and educational information. This allows the EP to understand as much as they can about your child before the assessment.

During the assessment, your child may:

  • take part in activities with a familiar adult whilst the EP watches
  • take part in activities with the EP

There are different activities the EP could use. They will choose the best option for your child. This will help the EP understand your child's strengths and difficulties.

The EP will gather the views of your child and key adults at home and at school. They will do this in a way that is appropriate for your child's age and ability.

Where the EP assessment will take place

Your child's EP EHC needs assessment could take place in person. This could be in:

  • your child's classroom
  • a quiet space at school
  • your home

Your child could have a remote assessment which happens online. Remote assessments can happen in a comfortable place that is familiar to you and your child. This might be your home. The timing and length of remote assessments are more flexible than in person assessments.
